sometimes when I'm bored, I go through the list of recent bad faith Wikipedia edits that have since been reverted. a lot of them are politically contentious/offensive topics that attract crazies and trolls in general, but sometimes there are completely innocent inoffensive articles that people attack for no reason. some guy yesterday vandalized the article on the chemical element francium
tbh i will never understand the sense of ownership some people have about the gifs they create OF OTHER MEDIA. like, if it’s your own original animation or content, yeah, you have full rights, 100%. if you hopped into a “screen recording” program, ran it over a scene of a video game or tv show, saved as .gif, then pasted that in a tumblr window? you have 0 reason to get territorial over someone reposting it. that’s the most entitled low-effort shit i’ve ever seen
the very first simulated image of a black hole, calculated using a 1960s punch card IBM 7040 computer and plotted by hand by French astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet in 1978.
i think the worst part about being in an all-male (or even mostly-male) friend group was the casual degradation of women. when a straight man sees another man posing, dolled-up, and displaying himself sexually, he reacts with revulsion because he recognizes the trappings of femininity as degrading and humiliating. but when a friend group of guys would pass around photos of women who are stripped down to underwear, tits out, revealing poses, etc. it’s “just male sexuality!” and “you’re kind of a prude,” and “you’re a jealous feminist” if i expressed any kind of discomfort or disgust.
when i was 16, i was in an all-male friend group just like that. we played a fantasy combat video game, as a group, and these were the male characters/skins:

these were the female characters/skins:

so like yeah i know what i’m talking about. i heard enough talk about these characters for a lifetime of disgust and indignation.
like. it’s soooooo accepted for men to get mad at seeing other men being objectified. when they see a man sexualized they respond with an indignant chorus of “eww that’s so GAY!” “i don’t wanna see that!” but apparently women being objectified is totally fine to the point of being background noise? ok 🙄
